SMTA Malaysia 2015 Rundown

View of Malaysia

Electrolube sponsored the latest SMTA conference in Penang this month; the full title was 'South East Asia Technical Conference on Electronics Assembly' but SMTA is much easier to say! Phil Kinner, our Global Coatings Business Director, also joined me in order to present his Technical Paper entitled: 'Taking the shock out of Thermal Shock'.

The Conference was held in Penang, an Island off the North Western Coast of Malaysia. You might think it's an odd place for an Electronics conference, but as a free trade zone, Penang is one of Asia's main production areas for Electronic components and assembly. The island is connected to the mainland by two large bridges, and immediately after crossing the bridge you arrive in Kulim, another industrial area boasting some major international companies.

Penang is not, however, the easiest place to reach from Europe. Phil and I started from two different airports (Heathrow and Manchester), and both had 20+ hour flights with two changes. We knew it would be worth the effort, though, with such a good conference and so many customer visits ahead.

FIEE 2015 Rundown

FIEE 2015 at the Anhembi Parque in Sao Paulo, Brazil

FIEE – it’s well-known in the industry as Latin America’s largest International Electric, Electronic, Energy and Automation Trade Show. Occurring once every 2 years, this was the first FIEE since 2013, and boy, did we notice a difference since we last exhibited.

It was a lot smaller than it was in 2013 – and a lot more Chinese! It’s no secret that the new Brazilian Government is no longer subsidising its taxes after falling into recession last year, and with no impending World Cup to work towards anymore, Brazilian manufacturing is starting to take a hit. Only about half of the exhibitors from 2013 were present at FIEE this year.

But funnily enough, it’s not actually as bad as it sounds.

The Electrolube team being presented with an award for participation at EFY Expo 2015 in New Delhi

Electronics for You Expo 2015 in New Delhi, India, turned out to be a roaring success, not only for us here at Electrolube, but for the Indian industry as a whole – marking an overwhelmingly positive start to the Indian economy’s potentially rocky year.

Energised by this years’ theme: ‘Celebrating the Success of the ESDM Industry’, Indian exhibitors revelled in shaking off the cautious predictions whispered by economic soothsayers at the end of 2014. You could feel the optimism for 2015 charge EFY Expo’s atmosphere as Indian ESDM (Electronics System Design & Manufacturing) success stories were shared continuously throughout the event at the CEO Summit.

IPC Apex 2015 Rundown

Phil Kinner presenting part 2 of 'CC-830 vs the real world' at Apex 2015

Apex 2015 was a great show for Electrolube – well, let’s face it, Southern California in February is a great place to be! I was joined by the US General Manager, Randi Gates, and together we met a good number of existing customers and channel partners, but more importantly; we met a lot of potential customers.

Their needs seemed to spread across all of our product divisions, and we saw an interesting pattern begin to emerge as we questioned our new potential clients. Each conversation would start off discussing an initial application; perhaps a Conformal Coating, for example, and then we would end up discussing the rest of our product divisions as we trouble-shooted further complications and problems that the visitors were having with their assemblies.
