The LED driver is should not be overlooked when considering a design, both the environmental protection of the unit and the thermal management can play a crucial part in efficiency. As with any power electronics unit, thermal management is a key consideration utilised to dissipate heat away from the unit; this is particularly important in LED designs where the Luminaire is housed with the driver, (see Thermal Management of LEDs). The second consideration is the protection of the PCB from the environment. As is discussed in Protection of LEDs the entire unit can be potted in order to provide complete protection, however in less extreme environments a conformal coating may be a more cost effective option. Electrolubes 2K materials also offer ‘the best of both worlds’ providing protection for both the PCB and the Luminaire from the environment without the need to fully pot the unit and 2K500 has been used in LED applications such as street lighting.

HTSX is a silicone thermal interface material (TIM) which has been developed to perform in more extreme conditions than its sister product HTS. It exhibits extended characteristics to HTS, with higher thermal conductivity, extended operating temperatures and excellent stability with a much-reduced oil bleed.

It is a non-curing thermal paste, making it easy to apply and easy to rework if necessary. It is ideal for use on heatsinks or between components to dissipate heat away from the electronic device and can be used in a wide range of industry applications.

As with any thermal interface material, we would recommend testing before selecting as the TDS figures and performance of the product may vary depending on the individual application.
